They are debt collectors. Trying to collect a debt that I thought had been paid off in 2003. They are just now contacting me ... again, it was my understanding that this debt was paid off years ago!

Do you retain any document, like your bank statement that can show they cashed the check, return stub of MO etc? You can send them an already paid letter.
Atlantic Credit....
Unfortunately, no. I have moved twice since I paid them off. I am going by memory ... which is not going to work, I know. I will just have to get a payment plan ... which I can't make anyway ... and see what I can do. Any suggestions?

Check your credit report asap...If you haven't already requested your annual credit report, if you go to www.annualcreditreport.com you can request one there..See what's on there.
Was this the same company that you paid in 2003? If not you need to contact the company you paid and try to get the documentation.
Get validation of this debt before you make any payments.

If you have already paid the account, why should you pay it again? Do what Jessi has suggested. If you paid the debt in 2003, hopefully it will be there in your report. See if it can help you at this point.

Contact your bank because they will be able to track the debit done by Atlantic Credit. Ask them to dispute the debit with the company. If they are unable to clarify the transaction, money will be reverted back to your account. Talk to the bank supervisor first.
atlantic credit
a have been contacted by atlantic credit. i had hoped to work out a settlement with them. the person i talked with yelled at me, threatened me, and refused to set up any type of repayment. he demanded that i pay my debt in 2 days or he would sue me for everything i own. he also called my parents who are 78 and live out of state and have nothing to do with this. i told him i had filed for bankrupcy and i would be contacting my lawyer and finally had to hang up on him to stop him from yelling.
Atlantic Credit
I just received a call from Atlantic Credit and they were awful to me as well. I could not believe the things they said to me. They told me that i wasnt paying because i was a dishonest person and that i was running from my debt. They were completely rude and Jeff Philips was the person i spoke with. If anyone else has had an issue please post and let me know

They have been sued 48 times, and more often in 2009 and 2008, for FDCPA violations.
They have 61 complaints to the BBB in the past 3 years.
Considering that they manage in excess of $8 billion of distressed debt for more than 1 million (as reported) alleged debtors, that is actually not too bad.
If they violated the FDCPA, you need to file proper complaints with the FTC, the FCC, your state Attorney General, the Bureau of Consumer Affairs, etc.
