Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site and had a question on debt collector's calling my parent's house. I don't live there and they keep calling everyday. My parents have even told them time and time again to stop calling because I don't live there. I don't have a clue how to handle this...Are they allowed to call there? If not then how can I stop it?
Thanks in advance.

PS. This is a great community I think I'm going to start posting here.

Collectors can call your references to inquire your address. But they cannot disclose your financial obligations to some one else except your spouse. Send them a letter mentioning not to call at your parents number. Also tell them all communication should be through mails only. Send your request via CMRRR.

Also request for validation. If the debt is valid, you can think of paying it too. BTW, which collection agency is calling you?

If the collection agency calls and gets a person on the phone, they are not supposed to call again that day.

They are only supposed to call your relatives/neighbors once to leave a message or get info about your whereabouts. After that, if they continue to call them even after they said they have no info for them, it can be considered harrassment.

They are also supposed to send you something in writing, not just continue collection efforts by phone. Once you get their info, including their address, send them a letter saying not to call you or any third party anymore.

Keep a record of how many times they call, especially after they have already spoke to someone on the phone, because calling back the same day they talk to someone is definitely a violation, and you can get an attorney.

Maybe it would also be helpful to give them your phone number, then just screen your calls or send them the letter saying do not call, that would take some stress off your family members.

My brother and his four children lived in our home for about a year after he lost everything. He left and now bill collectors are coming after me, and wanting payment from me because he used our address. He did not pay rent, and has no ownership in this house. Can they come after me for payment because we took them in?

Thank you Soap Lady,
The bill collector came to my house this morning! Asked me if I was SURE this house was not owned by my brother, because a lien could be placed on the house? I said, I could prove the house was mine. It was unnerving to say the least. When I said, "we did not part on good terms" and therefore could not give a new address, he asked what other names I could provide to track him down. I asked him to take our address off of my brother's bill. At what point should we get a lawyer?
