Kind of OT Gas prices
Date: Wed, 04/19/2006 - 11:47
ARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!
Gas at my closest station went up *21 cents* today. This brings the total change in price over the last month to $1.08 a gallon; the price here is now $3.07 in suburbs of Norfolk, VA. That is just outrageous. I know there are all kinds of reasons and excuses, but that doesn't make it hurt less financially.
Ok, rant over. :)

I put $10 in my tank and didn't even get 1/4 tank. This sucks.

So I won't complain here in the midwest anymore...sorry I think here it's 2.67 or 2.69 generally. Sunday night I was in a small town where my in-laws live and it was 2.59 and my mom-in-law had a 10 cent off coupon so I only paid 2.49. Maybe the midwest isn't that bad of a place, a few tornadoes occasionally but at least gas is cheaper.

LUCKY! :)
I remember after the hurricanes and gas went up over $3..I think I paid around $3.10...And then I was driving and saw it for $2.75 and got all excited.

I know. The latest excuse is that they are removing MTBE (which is a good thing, since it causes cancer), and will be using 10% ethanol. For years I've heard that ethanol-gas blends are *cheaper*, but there was an article in the local paper Sunday that it will cost about 10 cents more per gallon. How about remove some of the govt price supports for corn, since there will be more demand for the price= higher price for corn, and the cost of ethanol will go down. But maybe that is too simple a view.
Plus, all the gas stations had to have the tanks certified for ethanol. With MTBE, there could be 4-6 inches of water and gunk in the tank, and it was ok. With ethanol, any water will keep the gas from combusting properly. I think it cost $600 per gas tank to clean them out, so that is being passed along to us as well, instead of coming out of Exxon/ Shell/ Texaco/ BP's billions in profits. Oh, can't ask them to pay for it.

I think the highest price we paid in my area was about $3.20? Plus shortages and some areas here in the Southeast were completely out of gas. But it beats being in the path of the hurricane.

SEE, that is what I've always heard and read, but yet here in VA we are being told it will make the gas prices go up. As seen in the 21 cent increase.
And OUCH Missy, it's already $3.81 in MD??

My dad was looking at his records of gas for his truck (they go away in the winter) and before they left when he filled his truck in October (I think) it was like 2.40 a gallon and now it's so much more. YUCK.
Jessi - good luck with the horse, you'll have to clean up after it.

Really Tammy? Shoot I hadn't checked per barrel price of oil sin
Really Tammy? Shoot I hadn't checked per barrel price of oil since last week. On Thursday-ish, it was $67.
Funny thing is that according to the govt, there is a *surplus* of oil sitting in the US right now, over 10% more than this time last year. The reason the price is going up is refining capability blah blah blah (imagine me sitting here with hands over ears blah blah). Same old same old- price goes up because we don't use gas, and they need to make a profit; price goes up because we do use gas but they can't refine it fast enough/they shut down refineries at convenient times to get max price raising ability/ whatever the excuse of the day is.
Don't get me wrong, I know oil is a limited natural resource, and I don't want to see it wasted, but more could be done by the govt to keep gas prices steady. Not only is the drastic changes in gas prices effecting us directly at the pump, I dread the cost of produce/ things made with plastic (or in petroleum-based packaging)/ any consumer goods this summer.
The local school board had to raise the budget per student $1700 in one year, to account for higher gas prices. It's going from $8400 per student to $10,100 per student.
This is where it is at!

Washington Becomes Fourth State to Require Ethanol Use Sioux Falls, SD (March 31, 2006) ??? Washington Governor Christine Gregoire has signed Senate Bill 6508 into law, a renewable fuel standard requiring two percent of the state's gasoline and diesel consumption to be ethanol and biodiesel by December 1, 2008. State Representative Jan??a Holmquist (R-Moses Lake) was the prime sponsor of the House version of the legislation. T he bill signing took place yesterday in Moses Lake. The American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE), a non-profit association for the industry with nearly 1,000 members nationwide, today congratulated the state of Washington on this forward-thinking measure. ???The U.S. ethanol industry, including the thousands of local owners who produce fuel for their American neighbors, is proud to have the state of Washington on board with biofuels through this new renewable fuel standard,??? said Brian Jennings, ACE Executive Vice President. ???ACE applauds the vision of Representative Holmquist for driving this effort, and to Governor Gregoire for her partnership and willingness to grow the production and use of renewable fuels in Washington.??? The measure includes components to ensure there will be a market for Washington-grown crops as feedstocks for these biofuels. Also, it would require all state agencies to use a minimum of 20 percent biodiesel as compared to the total volume of all diesel purchase made by the agency. Three other states have passed ethanol-blended fuel requirements: Minnesota, Montana, and Hawaii. Several other state legislatures are considering such moves in this year's legislative sessions. ethanol.org . |

Polly, I can't believe they left VA off. It's effective May 1, 10% of Virginia gas must be ethanol. Stations are scrambling to change over.

President Bush is refusing to uncap the oil here in the states. He said it needs to be preserverd. Preserved for what? The way I see it we are lining the oilmans pockets and they are laughing all the way to the bank.

No kidding Ari.
Did you know that US taxpayers PAY for Halliburton to deliver gas in Iraq? We pay (well as of last summer) about $2 per gallon, and it was being sold for about a quarter a gallon. I don't know what the current prices are, but I would bet the contract is still in place.

I know Venezuela signed an agreement with India, to provide India all of their excess oil production. Venezuela is actually our biggest supplier, yet there is a lot of tension between the US and Chavez. *sigh*. Today Chavez threatened to blow up the oil fields if the US attacked there. Except oil prices (and) gas to double tomorrow. Ok, just kidding. But the price will climb much more based on "instability" in the region. (the article is on Yahoo news, I wasn't sure if I could include a link here)
