Anyone else having any IRS trouble?

I was able to kill it before it went into effect by working out a payment plan. Must be their way of getting noticed.
I did not think they could do that - take your entire income ( well about 80% of it ). No courts no judgements - just do what they want.

Special rules for the IRS. I'm glad you were able to get the lien removed. They are serious about collecting payments, but from what I've ready they are usually pretty good at accepting payment arrangements.
payment arrangements
We owed the IRS a couple of years ago and this year we also owe them I sent my tax return in and a letter asking to set up payment arrangements with me. I the previous time they did and it fit my budget and I paid them off early. I actually was told by a IRS rep that they will work with you if you make the effort and make payments to them.

about 6 years ago I had to do payment plan with IRS they are very understanding when you make the call first. I had made payments to the IRS many many years. Now I finally getting refunds instead of having to pay. For the past 4 years I have gotten refunds since we bought the house in 2001.

I also heard that the IRS can just go take the money out of your bank account, they don't need a court order or any special paperwork. If you owe money, they can go take it.

The IRS can freeze bank accounts, but it does require a legal order (that I believe that can issue) in other works they can't just do it, they have to have a valid reason.

Thanks for the input everyone.
Jj - its hard to nail them down when they are the law. I mean where do you turn? Get a good lawyer is about all.
I have noticed they have been cracking down recently.
From my experience its amazing how much power that IRS agent on the other end has. But you can use that to your advantage. If you get an agent who is rude and unwilling to work then keep it short, look for a way out of the call without commiting and then call back for a different agent. It really makes a huge difference which agent you get. They seem to make up the law as they go along. If you do get a rude one then whatever you do remain cordial.
Eventually I am going to get a good tax attourney to hopefully negotiate some of my debt down which was from a failed business of mine years ago. For now I was instructed to fill out an income/expense form so they can evaluate how much I should pay. As it stands I agreed to the max monthly payment for my debt which I can afford as long as I do not do anything stupid finacially. The payments should be lower once the form is processed.

IRS had a ten year statue of limitations once they place any form of lien on property. If they cannot collect in the 10 years they will drop it as they did with me. My deadbeat ex left me 35k in debt with them. All his prior debt... The reason they came after me is that deadbeat did not file a return until WE were married.... soooooo I got stuck with no refunds for 10 years!!!!!! Finally in 2000 my SOL was up and I got a refund.

You couldn't file as an innocent spouse so they couldn't make you repay his debt? I'm glad that it's no longer collectable so that you don't have to keep paying for his mistakes.
OOOPS I forgot,,,,,, IRS can only garnish 25% of your paycheck.
OOOPS I forgot,,,,,, IRS can only garnish 25% of your paycheck. That is law. Anything more is considered an undue hardship.
The best thing to do is call them and talk with them and offer to pay something on the debt. They will work with you but, they will also lien your home if you own a home as collateral.

I,too, had dealings with the IRS. I called them and said what I was comfortable paying and they accepted it. We have been paying for several years, and hopefully, this year since I lost my job,we will get money back which the IRS will take and pay off our debt to them. I never missed a payment and was always on time though. They asked for more but I told them I wanted to be sure I could pay them and not get in a bind and not pay.I did send five extra dollars a payment over what i told them I would pay,not much, but if they see you are going to pay they will work with you. Several years ago we got slapped with a huge debt from them from my father-in-law's business. My husband was listed as vice-president so they came after us. But we got out of that claiming we didn't know anything about the taxes or business matters. My father-in-law also signed something saying we had nothing to do with the money dealings, thank God!!

Mom3kid. I am still quit a way from 10 years. This is from 2001-03. My payroll dept are the ones that notified me that the IRS was going to be taking my checks so yes they can do it. If I had not called them they would have taken it all except for $350.
I thought all they could do was garnish as well and thats why I was putting it off. I figured the Garn amt would be equivalent to my payments so I thought I could buy some time and not start paying until they pressed it. I figured wrong.
You can file a hardship as no one can live on what a lein leaves you with but that may not be in time to stop a check or 2. Try living without a couple of pays.
Almost enough to drive a sane person back to payday loans. ironically enough at the height of my payday loan problems my pays were widdled down to about the same amt the IRS was going to leave me with.

Perhaps your payroll clerk does not know the law. If I could find the packet of laws I got from a former IRS agent I would send them to you. Thats where I learned of the 25% and the 10 yrs statute of limitations.
Tammy is a whiz at laws perhaps you could ask her. She is so resourceful!

Innocent spouse.... Please.... the deadbeat works under the table and the IRS wanted their $$$$. I paid what i could and they took my refunds for 10 years. Now I am ok with them and owe NOTHING!!!!

Its called a Wage Lein. Its very real and can happen. Probably one of the most braindead ideas I have ever heard of. Without a check you cannot pay rent or transportation and will eventually be homeless and unemployed. Then nobody gets paid.
Its supposed to be cancelled before my next pay but has not been yet. Its so stressfull.
