It has occurred to me that we may be asking the wrong question.

I was talking to a utility company about a confusing charge that they sent to collections that I did not know about (she said it was billed separately...same envelope) and I continued to pay only the gas bill and not the connection fee so they took it off and send it to collections. The collections company said they sent only one letter over a year ago because the amount is so small ($22). They said they had called about once a month but kept geting a fax signal.

Anyway after arguing with the gas lady she told me they never ever delete items...she said not even the head of the company will delete. She gave me a hint though. She said if it were her she would dispute it and she is not promising anything but hey might not be interested in verifying it since it is paid and they would have to take it off. I could tell she was really trying to help me after our severe arguments.

So some companies just have as a policy never to request a deletion(maybe pride or some deal with the CRAs). When we ask them and they say "we don't do that" we get mad. Maybe we should be asking them. "If it is paid and I request verification with the CRA, since I dissagree with the accuracy, will you guys end up verifying it or not?". Maybe some would agree not to verify as long as they have their money.

Just something to think about.

It must also be a complicated process to remove something because you probably have to admit fault and maybe you loose credibility with the CRAs. Even my school said the easiest was is to dispute it and they will make sure they supply correct information. He said the CRAs only give them 10 days (probably because the whole process takes 30 days). If you still owe them, they could just resubmit it the following month if they find the appropriate paperwork would be my guess.
