Hi everyone, I have a question about a collection agency that sent me a letter. I was playing around on the Internet about 6 months ago and got a free teeth whitening kit. Today I got a letter from a C.A. and they said I own them $90. Now I know they only have my name and address, nothing else, not even a credit card (because it was free) but they said that they can still post negatively on my credit report. How is this possible? Are they just giving me a story hoping I'll pay it?

Thank you in advance!

Hi jcbarron

I will stay alert with this collection agency. Do monitor your credit report regularly and see that they don't enter negative information in your file. Their should be a legitimate reason for entering any records in the file. If they have such legitimate details, it should be sent to you in writing first.

Send a debt validation letter to the collection agency requesting details of the accounts. The credit card company for which they are collecting must be clearly identified along with proper calculation of the debt amount. Without this info in writing, the CA has no legal rights to take any sort of actions. Send your letter certified with return receipt requested.
