I had dental work done last August and was left with an outstanding bill after my insurance payment. I have been making 50.00 payments every month ever since. I still owe the dentist 800.00. I received a letter from the dentist stating that if this bill is not paid in full by this August, he will send the bill to a collection agency. Can he do that?

he can do, bu twill he?? Colelctiosn agencies can charge up to 50% of what ever they recover. A lot of Doctors/Dentists say this to try and get payments, but have no intention of following through because the costs can be prohibitive. It may be a bluff to try and get you to pay sooner.

Did you have an agreement for the $50 payments? If so I would talk to the dentist (not his office manager) and ask him whats going on. Explain that you have been making your payments, and ask him to back off a little . Or you could offer to settle for say 75% of the bill since he will probably loose at least that 25% to the collection agency in the first place.

You are dealing with a small business person, they will be more willing to work with you if your are up front and honest with them.
