My husband lost his job in august 2005 and wasnt working for a month and half so I was trying to pay the bills but of course it wasnt enough, thats where our problems started. He found a job but we were still struggling with back payments. Then he found a better job but that job turned out to be bad really bad. His boss refused to pay him for hours he had worked so my husband of course wasnt happy with that and his boss told "then clean out your truck and find a ride home" (we live about two hours from his boss's office). so he has been out of job for a month and half. We decided to move to another state and because of that Im out of work. So we've been getting calls from collectors everyday and we have explained to them what happened but they keep saying "well you HAVE TO PAY THE DEBT". We tell them we just can't. Money does come from trees. So now we dont know what to do. We're really stressed out. Any advice??

Not paying the debts will only worsen the situation. Besides, the credit companies might take legal actions as long as the debt remains within the legal statutes. Since you have a legitimate debt, try to make partial payments so that the account remains current and you are not forced into any legal actions.

Take a consolidation route if that's beneficial in your way. You will be offered lower monthly payments after the consultant reviews your debt accounts and negotiates with your creditors. The counselor will guide you in the right direction with his helpful advice. Your payments towards the accounts will stop many unforeseen conditions in the future. The best thing to be done right now is to register in this site and take a free counseling. Talk with a consultant before you make your financial decisions.

Don't stress. It won't do any good. While the counselor will frame your payments, did you review the statements with your creditors how they reached to that total?

Since you are getting calls from the collectors, they need to validate the debt in writing as per the federal laws. Upon request, they need to come out with the complete info about your debt account. There must be logical reasons behind the charges put by them. Did you get anything in writing from them or they are just pushing you over the phone?

No I havent got anything in writting. I made an arrangement to settle a credit card and they want me to send them $400 with a check over the phone but after what I've read on this website Im going to cancel the check and ask the collectors to send me the info in writting. But how do I get rid of these debt? They're too many to handle

Send a debt validation through certified mail with return receipt requested. You will cover your back in legal terms. The collector must respond to your request in writing before you make any payments to them. After you have received the info, check for its accuracy first.

You can't skip the debt if it is a legitimate one. If you intend not to pay and the debt is within the statutes, chances are that the company might sue you. Check for the date of last payment done and confirm whether you can run the expiry of SOL on it.

Carmen---Does your husband belong to any type of union? Are you working? Maybe you or your husband could sign up for temp work to make some money to help with the bills. The main thing is you don't want to not pay the bills. Relax and wait for the counselor to call==probably on Monday.

I have been getting calls, but no one seems to be from this site. I even called the toll free number and was told I would get a call back. How come the name of the company isn't released? They all say that I initiated the inquiry. My payday loans are coming due again Friday and so is my car payment, phone bill, car insurance, etc... I really need help fast.

kimlozada, you did the sign up on the 10th of June. Maybe someone has already called you by this time or you were unavailable during that time. You can sign up again and request a call for credit counseling. Remember, you need to use a different email address as the first one is already put in the system. It won't get through.
