cool thanks for your help. so i just called them, seems like every worker i get there is incompetent of giving me answers. months ago i settled my collection in full (which wasn't even my fault to begin with) and the operator said she will zero out my balance, and send me a receipt in the mail, 3 months later, still nothing, so i called again today, a new operator says it hasn't been done yet, so she will do it, she says she doesnt knwo when it will be completed so i should try to call back, but when do i call back? the lady says in 1 week, wtf? this is why they are getting sued...is there anything i can do to get my damn receipt so i can write my letter to the collection agencies????? i hate life....

I was the victim of serious identity theft and fraud. An individual now in Federal prison stole my identity, and charged American Express approx $200,000.00, and althought the criminal was caught and in jail American Express is still reporting the debt on my credit!! Amex fraud dept does nothing to assist! And direct disputes to buerus for 2 years have not worked. Can you advise??

You need the zero balance letter. It is a vital piece of information that will protect you should by some fluke this somehow gets in the hands of some other agency trying to collect on the same bill you already paid.
Write NCO and ask for a zero balance letter. Send them a copy of the cancled check or get a letter from your bank stating that the transaction cleared and on what date.
To go one step futher I would get a zero balance bill from your creditor as well.

This all had to have been reported to the police for it to result in a criminal conviction. Do you have any information or legal documents from that? If you can get the documentation of that case, you will have all the proof you need. You are looking for official documentation either by the police or from the court that makes mention of the guilty party, your name and private info being used, and the places it was used. There has to be something in there that will show that the person racked up this bill. When you contact a creditor and claim ID theft, they will require a police report to be filed. Call them and tell them that you will do one better--the guilty party was caught, tried, and convicted, and is now in federal prison for this incident. Then, show them the official documentation.
If they still do not remove this from your credit file, then you go after the credit bureau that is reporting it. Inform them of theproof you supplied to AMEX. Also, inform them that the Fair Credit Reporting Act is clear about their obligation to ensure accuracy in your report. The FCRA, by the way, applies to both the credit bureaus and any creditor that reports info about you to them.

This is considered a "courtesy" terrible i know but any english major that tore apart the application you signed to begin with would know you screwed yourself when you signed it. Credit Bureau reports and collections accounts take aminimum of 30-60 days to update as paid. Settlements can take 120-150
