credit report shows debt collector making a claim.what to do?

Welcome to forums. Your credit report is showing an entry in collections. I assumed from your post that you are not aware about this debt. In these circumstances, you are required to contact the collection agency and ask for the verification of the particular debt. You will get the name, address and phone number of the collection agency listed in your credit report.

You can also retrieve contact information about a company by dialing the toll free number of the credit bureaus.

After you contact the collection agency, they are required to provide you the information about the amount of debt and the name of the original creditor. They are also required to inform you that you have 30 days to dispute the debt.

After investigating into the information supplied by the collection agency, if you feel that you do not owe the money, you are required to dispute the debt immediately. Please make sure that you do all your correspondence with the collection agency in writing by certified mail and request for a return receipt.

You can also dispute the debt in writing with the credit bureau that has reported this entry. They will also complete the verification process to know the origin of the debt and notify you about it.

A proof supporting your contention that you have made the payment will put you in the stronger position. Send copies of it to the collection agency as well as the credit bureau.

Don't forget to contact a lawyer.


because if it is a legal claim, then this would insinuate that this collection agency is at the point of taking some kind of legal action against you.


So get a lawyer so you would be able to develop some strategy in order to defend yourself.


Especially since you are unaware of the origin of this debt. You should definitely fight this.
