Usually, the creditors mark the accounts to a 'charged off' status when it is 120 days past due. During this time, they can either hire an internal collection agency or sell the debt to some other company. It is not necessary for the creditor to notify you about the latest change in the status. Try to keep in touch with your credit companies and extend your payment proposals. If you can arrange partial payment plans with them, they will desist from taking any legal actions against you.
