Quite embarrassing,

In order to claim some prize money, I was told to deposit a check into my account, and then use that money for prize processing fees. Sure enough, the prize never came through, and the check turned out to be bad.

Now, I'm about $850 in debt to my checking account and they are threatening collections.

Is this a secured debt? Can they put liens on my home / car / etc. if I don't pay back fast enough? I have also heard that this debt can't even be erased by a bankruptcy, including the fees!!

I realize that it was my own gullability / stupidity which got me here, but are there any options for reducing the amount or getting some type of leniency?

How should I proceed from here?

Thanks,

Dumbo

They just did a piece on our local tv about a woman who did the same thing. They reported it to the police and atty. general etc., Also if you sat down with someone at the bank and explain this, they may work with you. Me son go in a big mess with his debit card, lots of overdrafts, fees etc. I marched his butt up to the bank and sat down with a bank officer, explained the stupidity and worked out a deal he could pay off a little at a time until he got it paid off-might be worth a shot..Good Luck...Karen

Don't be embarrased, people fall for these scams every day.

Bossy is right..Explain to the bank what happened. No, they won't forgive the debt, but they may let you pay THEM instead of them sending it to a CA, or them getting a judgement to garnish.

Make sure you report this to anyone you can think of. Good luck, things will work out.
