Debt is the biggest issue these days. And more importantly, individual credit worthiness is evaluated after seeing the credit file. So, debt to income ratio must be kept to the minimum so that the credit takes a better shape. We all are going through some financial hardships and due to it, the credit is getting ruined closing future financial opportunities.
In order to repair the present credit stand, do anything to take care of it. If family members / friends can help, take their suggestions and advice. If you are considering for professional help, don't give a second thought. Your primary concern is to take care of the credit.
When you are considering professional help like a debt management program, some points should be kept in mind so that your programs give out better results. This article in the FTC website can answer some of your possible questions and work with the consolidation companies in a better way.

I'm calling them back tomorrow around noon to work out the details. I've already been told that basically it's some kind of 'negotiated' program whereby the entire debt is paid off in about 36mo with a reduction of the total debtload by about 18K in my situation, but who knows....proof is in the puddin' I reckon.

Consolidation programs give instant results. You get the monthly statements that show how your money has been applied. But when you work on a settlement program, the account has to be in default for at least 4 months. It is after this time the counselor starts calling up the credit companies and places their deals. The settlement company will assure reduced payments and finalize the deal as per your requirements. Since, you get a huge reduction in the total amount at the end, risk is involved. And at the same time, there are success stories also in it. Some people here are working with SDR. They might offer you some practical suggestions.
Yes, I'm hoping they do in my case. We'll see. Thanks!
