I just recieved a phone call from a Jeff Johnson at a number in Pennsylvania claiming that if I don't call him back today action will be taken against me. I googled the number, 215-320-0424, and it led me to a series of posts about how this company attempts to get social security numbers and bank account information from you. It also led me to a page on your website about Acadamy Services. Can you please tell me if you are affiliated with this company? Is this a real issue? As far as I know I don't have any outstanding bills.

they are a collection agency and we are not connected to them in any way, we are a forum community of people helping each other manage their debt, fight unjust/illegal practices, and insuring that as we live up to our financial obligations, taht our rights are protected.

Hi dfoster

We will recommend you to be aware of the federal laws while dealing with the collection agency. The fdcpa laws prohibit abusive practices by the debt collectors. The United States Congress knows that collectors can be overly aggressive and use unfair means to harass, abuse and deceive people while attempting collections. The Congress has written the FDCPA for offering legal protection to the consumers against such shady collection practices.

You are protected by the US Congress and the state laws. Ask Academy Services to give you the details of the debt in writing before attempting collections. The account info should be given to you within 5 days of placing the initial communication. If you have not got anything in writing from the company, send a debt validation letter through certified mail with return receipt requested. You will have proof of the company receiving your request to validate the account. They must not call you until the accurate details of the accounts has been given to you in writing. If they violate the laws, you have the right to sue Academy Services. When you will win the lawsuit, the company will compensate you for the abuse along with your attorney fees and the court costs.

Is it in reguards to a credit card? Has it charged off yet? They might be trying to prevent an R4 (late pay) from being an R9 (bad debt) which is a huge consequence depending on your credit report and score.

A company can not threaten legal action unless they are actualy going to go ahead and take that action provided you do not meet a certain dead line. They can not bluff in this matter. It is illegal to do so.
