I paid them. What do I do?

I was contacted by LVNV Funding in 2001 about making payment arrangements to pay off the balance (a little under $2K). We agreed on a payment method (ie, it was going to be several payments of so much and settled for about $800). It was set up and then when I tried to call to make the last payment I was told it was turned over to another agency (???) b/c it wasn't settled in time (despite the fact we had an arrangement). I *think* I made that last payment anyways and that was that. (I can't remember, it was 5 yrs ago).
Today, I received another letter, this time from allied interstate saying they are now acting on LVNV Funding's behalf to collect the whole payment! It's as if the payments I made were never made! That was $800! I have not contacted either one of them yet. I dont have any documentation of paying them (like I said, it was 5ish years ago and since then have moved overseas and back) and it doesn't show anything negative in my credit report from them last time I checked.
What can I do now? Is there a way to contact LVNV and see if they have records that far back? Do I contact Allied Interstate and ask for written documentation of what I owe? I'd appreciate any help! :)

Hi jv40646
Contact LVNV Funding at 888.665.0374. Remember, whenever you make a payment in the future, have proof and documentation so that you don't loose your money to wrong hands. These collection agencies can pop up anytime in front of you. They can even try to hurt the credit file without legitimate purpose. If you have proof of everything in the past, you can sue them for hurting your file negatively.
Allied Interstate is also one of the worst collection agencies around. They come up with false collection attempts. Most of the times, the details given by them is disputed. Send a debt validation letter in writing for getting the true picture of your account. If they have it, they will be able to put in writing. In this letter, all the payments made to LVNV Funding must be posted accurately. Be aware of your legal rights while dealing with these collectors. Check out the laws mentioned in the FDCPA and use it as a legal protection.
