Hi everyone, I'm a first time visitor on this site....I need help.....Any suggestions on debt consolidation? I am tired of beign scared of answering my phone....I have debt collectors calling me and demanding thousands of dollars....I just can't do that....I am willing to make payment arrangements but not what they want....can they legally sue me for this? Like I said...I am willing to make payments...I even had one tell that they were going to report me to the IRS (a form 1099-C) - what is this? HELP :(

1099-c is for self-employment earnings (I am self employed and work out of my own office at home). What company told you they were going to report you?

What kind of debt are we talking about here, are they with credit cards? Payday lenders?

First of all, when you receive a call from collector, ask the person who the orginal creditor was. Get their name and address. Send a debt verification letter through the certified mail to the collector then go from there.

Hi deannajamison

Perfect advice by sapphiredreams! Know the name of the creditors for which the CA is attempting collections. You can also get the details about the company from the latest copy of your credit report. If the CA is not authorized to collect the debt and has reported in your file, you must place the item on dispute with the bureau for rectifications. Collections are a derogatory remark in the file and lower the credit potential.

Once the CA has placed the initial communication, he must give you the details of the debt in writing within 5 days. Review the account thoroughly before you make a payment agreement. If you have problems working with the CA, try to contact the credit company and work out payment arrangements with them. They might be easier to work with.
