Sheila, if you have paid a car loan in full and have proof of payment and they have not given you your title, contact your state deparment of motor vehicle licensing for assistance they may be able to help you since the law provides certain statutory requirements for releasing title..

"title search". You can then see who has title to your car, contact them to see if they have the title.
If they don't, perhaps you can show proof of paid in full and have them sign off the lien and have DMV issue you a new title for the car.

Jaime - I am sure you can contact your state's DMV and file a lost title form, which would allow you to replace your lost copy. There is probably a small fee, but since you really can't do squat with the car without one...
But do not leave your title in your car. There is really no reason to keep it there. If you feel the need to have it in the vehicle, make a photocopy and carry that, but put the title in a safe place inside your house.
