Can Chexsystem close your existing Bank account from another institution?

No, chexsystem only keeps the records you have with your previous banks. Negative records stay with the chexsystem for five years. If you have not paid the overdrafts and cleared all charges with your existing bank, it will be reported to the chexsystem.

During this time, other banks won't be willing to open a new account for you after checking your records with the chexsystem.

It will be better to pay off all the dues with the bank and then close the account. Don't have negative information reported with the chexsystem. All financial institutions can easily view your past records and assess your relations with the bank.

I'm on chex systems because of an online bank that screwed up. I didn't have any outstanding checks, only the bank's fees.
It did not close my account that I had with another bank at the same time, but I myself closed that account a few months later.
When I tried to get another checking account at a local bank not longer after that I was denied.
With that said though, I opened a savings account with a major bank and they did not run me through Chex Systems. After I had that savings open for 5 months I opened a checking account. That bank never checked me through Chex Systems.
I'm going to dispute those fees that I have with Chex Systems or pay them soon. Even though I have a new checking and savings I want that stuff off their record.

I tried to open an account with TD Banknorth and was decline. It said something about Chexsystem so Im trying to find out what happen. My previous bank account I had to close because of what I owe to PDL. It was 30 bucks I had to pay back to my bank. I paid it. I did have a personal loan with a credit union I had charge off. I wonder if that the reason I couldnt open the account up.

I owed a bank, and my debt was turned over to a collection by this bank. If I pay what I owe them, will my record be removed from chexsystem? Do I contact the bank directly or the collection agency it was turned over to?

It depends on the bank. From my experience, most banks will not remove the chexsystem record. It stays on for 5 years unless it is removed. The bank that reported you is the only one that can remove it. I have worked for 2 banks and neither would ever remove a chexsystem record even though the customer paid their balance. What state are you in? If you need to find a bank that doesn't use chexsystems goudah has a list of them.

Since you were denied an account you can get a free copy of your Chexsystems report. You should have been given a form to fill out from the bank for the free report. You will have to get the report to find out what the item is with and what it was for.

Some common reasons for being reported to chexsystems are:

Fraud

Too many NSF's

Owing the bank money on a negative account

Bounced Checks

Are there really legitimate banks and credit unions that will work with people on chex system?
