I recently paid off a collection agency for a debt. I was told I'd be getting a copy sent to the court that the matter is resolved etc... However, I was told I'm responsible for informing the credit reporting agencies in order to update my credit report. IS this true? I'd assume if I paid, shouldn't THEY be the ones who should send copies of the paid account?

The creditors / collection agencies are liable to report the accounts to the bureaus after they are paid off. What is the status of this account? Is the collection agency hired by your original creditor or they are now the current creditor?

If the CA is hired by your creditor, contact the company and notify them about this CA. Also request them to update your file with the bureaus so that your credit file shows some improvement. Some companies immediately report with the bureaus while some take longer time. If you don't get the results within the expected period, explain the situation to the bureaus. They will verify it with your companies and update the file. Under the FCRA laws, your credit report must report the actual standing of the accounts. If any company is unwilling to report the true status of your accounts, you can file charges for FCRA violations on the grounds of keeping negative information in your file when provided proof.
