There have been so stories (both in the news and out) about people Identity Information being compromised because some company had lax security , or an employee took home files on a computer that was stolen, etc. SO how has your identifying information been compromised?

I'll start. When I was about 23, my wallet with my Drivers License and Social Security Card were stolen. Now I no longer carry my social security card with me (it's in a safe deposit box) and I no longer use my Drivers License as ID.

About a month ago my employer informed us a HR employee took a file home on their computer that had names, addressed, birth dates and Social Security numbers of 36,000 employees. That employees home was burglarized and the computer was stolen in the burglary. It is now coming out that every employee in the company may have been affected , thats an additional 40,000 people.

By the way. For anyone who's employer uses ADP for their payroll, you may want to check. Last week the ADP office in Chicago faxed payroll information (including financial information such as bank accounts numbers and routing numbers ) to the wrong place , and some guy in Florida received it.

I was a victim of identity theft some years back. A friend of mine whom I trusted most used my personal information and opened fake accounts in my name. It was hard for me to believe that he was causing serious damage. I don't remember having a problem with my employer. The stories of identity theft are increasing in the corporate world leading to fatal consequences. These things cannot be stopped from happening but the preventive measures should be used strongly to fight back.
