I got a call from what I thought was CVE but must be cbe group. The guy asked me if my last four of my SSN was XXXX? I told him no even though he was right cuz I had no idea that this was a collection agency. Thought it was a scam. Is this legal for collectors to know your SSN (or at least your last 4). I'm a veteran and I am incredibly apprehensive about anyone knowing my SSN these days. So, really my question is "do collector have access to our SSN's?" Thanks.

Yeah, they probably do know your social security number from whatever bill it is that's past due. Whether it's a credit card or another bill of some sort, the original creditor has your soc. number and then passes that on to the collection agency when they turn the account over. They use your soc. number to report to the credit bureaus.
