Hi Janus,
Welcome to the forums. I will suggest you to ask the person who is incarcerated to contact his creditor immediately. Many people have reported about their situation when there family members were receiving repeated phone calls and letters.
The main intention of the creditors and the bill collectors behind this act is to recover the money from the family members if they can. However, the family members are not legally responsible to pay the said bill.
Ask the person who is incarcerated to contact the creditor and inform them about the situation and that the bill cannot be paid in the present moment.

Generally I don't think that the creditors really care where the money comes from if they are getting paid. I would make sure that you save all documentation and get receipts when you do pay, however.
Inmate ID Victim
I was in jail when someone stole my ID. I am being sued for a credit card opened; what should I do?
