1) If you have time, get a second job:
I found a side job as a pet sitter. It's a small job that only requires about 15 minutes a day and gives supplemental income. You can also try babysitting, or writing blogs for money.
2) Stop using credit cards. Carry cash, instead. The withdrawel fees are worth it, rather than having to pay penalty fees for using money you don't really have.
3) Get a credit counselor. They will help you to make the right decisions with your money and your credit.
Here is some good info on counselors : http://www.business-training-schools.com/bus/fiscal-fitness.html
4) Be honest. If you are seeking a grace period, start with "To be honest," or "I'm going to be honest with you..." Collectors like to hear that, and they know that you are legit. They are less tolerant of those that set unrealistic goals and do not meet them.

I also support disposal of the credit cards. These cards tempt people to make purchases and as a result spoil the budgeting system of an individual.
New bankruptcy laws will take effect soon and it will be very tough to get a chapter 7.
Considering these factors, I believe that living on cash is the best solution to your financial problems. Plastic money is more expensive than the real one.
Thanks, guitar_slayer for the noble suggestion.

I have no doubt that we'll one day live in a society where there will no longer be paper currency...just plastic...could be a disastor!

Ch, have you considered an apprenticeship at a hair salon or at a hair school? ONce you earn those credentials, you can get your license and work from home doing hair. My mom's friend does that and she makes good money :-)

It is always good to look at other alternatives to get out of debt. Ch, that wouldnt be a bad idea to work from home doing hair. It will bring in extra income to help get rid of your debt. I have tried a number of things from doing research things and working overtime from my regular job.
