Hi My brother is in Japan and lost his wallet with his student ID and C. Cards.

Some are my cards that I had the C. Card company issue another with his name on it.

I have cancelled all the cards and nobody has spent anything unauuthorized but I was wondering if there are any steps to take against ID theft.

Does this open my bro up to ID theft?

Hi daltonsurf

Welcome to the forums. Please read this article to understand the top five credit card scams at the following thread.

It will be also helpful if you can activate a fraud alert in your name if it becomes urgent. You can know more from the Federal Trade Commission in this thread.

If the credit cards are cancelled and it was a student ID (vice a state or federal ID with a social security number on it) I would not be too concerned. Even if they had bad intentions, there is not much they can do.

However, it is always better to be more safe than sorry. Report the stolen cards to local police (if it was stolen over seas I would report it there and back hom) just so it is documented. This way if a charge shows up or there is something to dispute in the future - you should be protected by this documented proof of being vicitmized.

You may also wish to alert the organization that this ID card was produced by (and for) that your card was not lost ... it was stolen (even if you don't know for sure). That way they'll be on a higher alert to watch out for duplicates.
