IF you are under 18 and some one has used your s.s card to open up an account and never paid the bill. When you turn 18 will it be on your credit report?

According to the FTC, identity theft affects all the age groups.

I suggest you to take the following steps:

  • You should close all the accounts that you feel have been fraudulently used resulting in identity theft.

  • Get new bank accounts with new numbers.

  • You should check your credit report regularly.

  • Keep a constant vigil on your personal information and how it has been used. You should keep your information in safe place.

  • If you have outdated personal information, you need to destroy it. Shred all the outdated information which has your name, address and social security number printed.

  • It will be advisable to reduce the amount of the personal information that you carry along with you.
You should lodge a complaint at the police department with the place where the identity theft took place.

Natasha

Understanding your emergency, it is entirely upon the wish of the financial institution if they want to extend credit to you. If you have any account with your bank for a long time, approach them and request for some help. It will depend upon the type of banking relationship you have maintained with them so far.

However, if there is anything that you can keep as collateral, some company might be keen towards extending the credit to you.

It strikes me as interesting that your parents wont co sign. Could it be them that used your information fraudulently? Tread very carefully, my dear. You have recieved some good advice so far, but I would also like to advise you that you need to fill out a police report as well. Not only will the police look into it, but this also establishes a paper trail for any future problems you may encounter.

David, I appreciate your kind words and everyone on this site. Your words of encouragement and advice have helped immensely. I have wiped out $1225.00 in payday loans just by sending out debt validation letters! I have only a few other debts to be concerned with, so I do not think that it would really benefit me to join. I do hope that you will still let me listen and occasionally join in though!
