Collection agency including interest charges

Does a collection agency has the right to add interest in my total debt? I have been asked to pay money along wiht the added interests? Do I have to pay this?

fdcpa laws allow a collection agency to add interest in the total amount of outstanding debt. This is permissible only if the original agreement states addition of interest in collection activities. The state laws also allow such collection agencies to add interest charges but it should be stated in the agreement deed.
