Has anyone had to write a letter regarding a dispute in an inquiry you see on your credit report? If so, can you please share your draft. There are some inquiries on my credit file that I don't recognize but I know they are hurting my credit score.

Hi Guest

Welcome to the forums.

Your credit report lists promotional and account management inquiries. These inquiries are not termed as official inquiries. The creditors or any other lending institution contact the credit bureaus and take the mailing address of the prospective consumers matching their criteria. These types of inquiries are made to offer credit or insurance.

Besides this, some of the creditors who have extended credit to you review your credit file on a periodical basis.

Try to reduce the number of inquiries from your credit report so that it puts a favorable view to your lenders. Multiple inquiries mean that you might be looking for large amount of credit or maybe in huge debt.

The FCRA offers protection to the consumers and they cannot be penalized for those inquiries which have not been requested or initiated.

Review all the inquiries that have been made in your credit report. Dispute each of the unrecognized inquires with the credit bureau reporting it. Use the following template to dispute with the credit bureau.

I dispute the accuracy of my credit file as revealed to me on [Give Date].

In accordance with Section 611 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I hereby request that you investigate the current status of the information I have disputed below in Paragraph 1.

If your investigation does not resolve the dispute, I hereby file the statement below (Paragraph 2) which shall be included in any subsequent consumer report containing the information in question.

Credit Grantor:______________________________________________________

Account No.:_______________________________________________________

The disputed portion reads: ______________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________

I maintain that: ________________________________________________

Your Street Address

Your City/State/Zip

Instructions for Use of Dispute Form

  • Print a blank version of the form as your master form.

  • Fill in your name, address, and Social Security number on the master form.

  • Make copies of the master form as needed. You will need as many copies of your master form as the number of derogatory items you are disputing.

  • Use one copy of the master form for each derogatory item showing at each bureau. Some accounts are reported to all three bureaus and some to
only one bureau. Do not dispute a derogatory item at any bureau to which it is not being reported!
