The counselor will calculate your monthly income and expenses (rent, food, etc). Based on this computation, he will analyze how much you can pay towards the plan. They will contact your creditors and let them know that you are using the consolidation program to pay off your debts. Some late payment fees are suspended by the creditors so that your payoffs become easier. Once the total debt is reduced, you will pay directly towards the principal amount. You will also receive monthly statements from the consolidators showing how your money was applied towards your credit accounts. This program will prove to be an effective step for wiping off all your debts.

Take a free counseling and discuss the whole procedure with the consultant. It's free here!

Consolidation programs do not damage the credit ratings. A statement showing that you are paying your creditors through the consolidation program will appear in your file. This does not have any negative impact in the long run. However, it entirely depends upon your lender if they want to extend any new credit to you being in this program.

On the other side, if you opt for a debt settlement program, it has a negative impact in the credit ratings. As the term 'settled' means that you have agreed to pay an amount that has been reduced, the lenders might get a feeling that you were not able to pay the owed balance due to some financial difficulties. Settlement is a negative remark and it will lower the credit scores. Moreover, it will stay on the file for a period of seven years.

Consolidation program does not have any such negative impacts. A statement showing that you are using this program is showing the true picture of you unless you have been able to pay the debt on your own. This will appear in the file as long as the debt is not paid in full. Once all accounts are paid off, the creditors will report your file with the bureaus with a positive note.
