I recently received a call from some guy by the name of "Invetigator Rowe". He needed to speak with me or my attorney. He didn't state the name of the company or what is was in reference to. This was on Thursday, February 2,2006. He called again on Tuesdy, Feb. 7,2006. This time he said "THEY" were sending an Officer here(to my job) so Suquestor me. He started talking about some kind of bank fraud with First National Bank. Asked if I ever lived at a certain address, how long have I work for the present company. When he requested me to transfer him to Human Resources, I hung up on him. I then called my fellow Para-legal and informed her of what happened. She said that it sounds like someone just trying to scare you into sending them money. When I called the # back, the gentleman answered the phone, Hello, may I help you? Clue # 1, In a legitmate business, one doesn't answer the phone, that way. He wanted me to verify my s.s# when I said NO, tell me what you have ,he then hung up on me. What can we as law abiding citizens do to stop this type of fraudulent misrepresentation from these people????

Be careful with the people on the said number. They are from Ellis Crosby. Lots of consumer complaints are against them on the internet for fraudulent collection practices. Besides, they were even sued by the Florida Attorney General and later on, the company had to file bankruptcy.

Ellis Crosby has been suspended from doing collections in legal terms. Later on, they started using other names for running their businesses. Most common names were Anthony Galloway and Associates, Jacoby Meyers etc. You should read the thread below for many other complaints against them.

Do not get intimidated when the collector calls up. They will try to use scary tactics to collect the money from you. FDCPA protects us from falling in wrong hands. Read the legal tips mentioned in the Federal Trade Collection and knows the ways of dealing with such people.

You must place your formal complaint against these illegal collectors at the FTC, BBB and the local consumer protection office. They have huge complaints against them and your recent complaint will make them completely alert forcing immediate actions.

They same guy just called me and said the same thing. At my place of employment, i do not answer "private numbers". Thats the beauty of having a direct line with caller id and voice mail. Any reputable company has their number listed. Why are bill collectors calling themselves "investigators"?

It's the common scare tactics often used by most of the collectors in the collections. They know that they are contacting because the person has defaulted in making the payment. It is just a way to taunt with threats of arrest and incarceration.

These tactics are defined as illegal in the fair debt collection practices. The collectors are legally restricted from intimidating and frightening people. If you can get these calls recorded for proving the violation, you can sue them for $1000.

Consumer protection laws have been framed to keep unscrupulous collectors from involving in illegal techniques. The permissible practices are clearly defined in the Federal Trade Commission's rules on Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (fdcpa)

Why can't these crooks be sent to jail where they belong? I hate these White Collar crime tolerances. Pilfering someones account and harrasing them is no different from breaking and entering or harrasing someone on the street.
