If you go through the debt consolidation process does this lower your credit score or affect your credit in any way?

There are many advantages of taking a consolidation program. Once you get enrolled in the program, a statement appears in your file that you are using this program. Your payments will be made regularly to your credit company and there won't be any risk of defaults. Thus, due to regular payments, your credit will always take the route to improvement of your file. The credit scores will always be on the up side after each account gets paid off.

Consolidation program stays in your file as long as you are paying off your debts. Once the accounts are paid in full, it is removed from the file and you have a completely new credit file in front of your lenders. They will never understand that you ever took a professional help.

If you visit a lender while you are in the program, they might not extend the best credit packages to you as it reflects that you have taken a professional help for paying off the debts. But this is much better than if you are delinquent for a regular period and all your accounts are past due.

I think you must discuss more with the consultant about this program. You will get most of your queries cleared while you are having counseling.
