I got this letter from some company that said they bought my debt from another company which I had never heard of, listed as creditor. Then on the next line is says original creditor, another company I have never heard of. in the amount of 6007.00 I have never browered that much from anyone other than our bank. And they have been paid off. it says they will settle for 2402.00 how can I find out what the story is with these people and who they are.

Hi bev303,

Welcome to the forums.

If you are sure that you don't owe to the original company, then there must be some clerical mistake in your credit report. The bureau might have entered someone else's information in your file. Dispute with them on this item and get it verified. If they fail to give you the results of their investigation, it has to be removed from there.

Check the name of the company that appears in your file. Their address must also be there. Write a letter to them also and request for the information. If they can't find the details, they must update the bureau with the changes.

Regards
Roxette

This is the exact thing that Collect corp did to me.

File complaints to File at the FTC, BBB and the DA's office asap. If theyre claiming you owe 6000$ but only want 2400, you can bet its a scam.

Check your credit report as well because they will try to destroy it if you dont pay their fraud bill.
