Hmmmm, this is interesting. While the request for your bank account number is highly suspect, the acquisition of your unlisted number sounds like a ploy often used by telemarketers.

Shirley, were you in the mall recently, saw some kind of sweepstakes right smack in the middle of the mall where you could enter to win the car on display? That's what this is riminiscent of. When you enter to win this vehicle, you are asked to provide your phone number! Did you enter any drawings, Shirley?

This window treatment company my brother used to work for used that mathod to get leads, people entering to win the car, and they employed telemarketing to get people's business, or try to anyway. I can't understand how deluded a company could be to still think that telemarketing works. It is crap!

The drawings held for cars in the mall may be suspicious as well. Mall managers don't always question these things. As long as the person entering the car pays the fee, who knows if it's even a legitimate company? It could be that some charlatan cleaned up his own car, parked it in the mall with a sweepstakes entry booth, and is using this to steal from people!

Everybody, I know you will, but please be careful!

Scam city Shirley! When it sounds to good to be true, then it is. Asking for a checking account number to deposit funds, huge red flag. They wanted your account number to drain your account, not place money in it. I would report this to the Attorney General and the FTC and make them aware that there is a scam going on.

Golden Rule - If you did not enter anything then you have not won anything.

Next time tell them to send you a check but don't give out your address as they would have that if you validly won something.

Lot of scams out there. I got the one a few times via e-mail where some foreign multi-millionair from Africa or SoutAmerica needs a checking account to deposite a few million in and I get to keep 200K for my trouble.

Ari, Glynnie is right!! I have actually heard of that one!!!! And I know the call that came to my house today was also a scam!!! I've heard about some of this stuff from being in the forum here. I have heard others asking about this very thing and I tell them RUN--its a scam!!!! so I know and am not about to fall for that. Cause no, I have not filled out any kinds of form for a contest!! and this is also a private number that I do not give out to anyone unless they're our friends and family. I have another line in my home that I run my computer DSL on and have a phone hooked up to it and I pass that number out to everyone!!!! so if I had of won a contest off of something I've done (which I haven't)---then they would be calling the number that I give out everywhere, the number I have had for the past 13 years. I am going to report these scums! as I said, my daughter is young-19-very innocent and niave in some ways, if she was living out on her own and someone called her saying this, no doubt she would have gave them her bank account number. This burns me up!!!!

Don't sweat it Shirley! I'm pretty sure Mary knows you were just joshing around about her avatar. She could be just busy! I know I have been lately! This new job is not what I thought it would be. It's 50 hours a week of on-foot lead gathering and telemarketing. Because of this, I'm falling behind in school because I get home too late to study! Not good! So I'm back to square one in the job search. I'll keep everyone posted on that in the woo-hoo interesting info topic.

Oh thats fine Ari, I didn't take it that way at all. I knew it was a scam and the first thing I said to my daughter is, its a scam. I wanted to post it here as a topic of discussion for those that maybe haven't heard of this and might 'fall' for it if they get the call and don't know any better. its all good!

HA!! they called me back today and man did I PISS the lady off. First off, she could barely even speak english, she sounded Indian, as in from India. I let her go on and on with her speech and pitch. Then when she came to the part where she said she'd have to have my bank account. I said, 'now heres where I have a problem, I believe this is a scam because why do you have to have my bank account number'?? she went on to say that it was a transition from one back to another, from their bank to mine. I told her that if I won the money, she could just mail me the check. she was really getting mad and went on about it had to be done through the bank, and our united states government was recording our phone call so that no fraud was involved. I said, I'm not interested, this is a scam. she was still talking when I hung up in her ear.
