DD,
Always walk along the right path. If you are dealing with collection agency, ask for debt validation first. According to fdcpa, third party collection agencies must send you written documents if you request. Check the debt validation carefully if it is free from errors.
Before paying them, try to make an agreement and keep documents of your payments to them. You can also contact your lender to know if they can directly take the money from you. Feel free to ask your queries in the forums if you have any.

One trick that collectors are resorting to now is calling from their personal cell phones. I have used that trick before. Almost everyone has caller ID. It is really hard for collectors to get a human on the phone because most people screen their calls. Some folks will answer their phone if they see it is a cell phone, maybe thinking it is a friend or relative with a new number. Now the collector knows the number he/she has been calling is good, and can start their talk off.
I expect to see legislation soon that will prevent collectors from calling from a personal number. In fact, I think it is already a violation of fdcpa because they are in a way misreprensenting themselves.

I agree with you beatle. Debtors receiving this type of calls can file complaint with FTC, BBB and AG's office.

That is one reason I don't answer any calls from a number I don't recognize, especially on my cell phone.IF they want to talk to me that bad, then can leave me a message and if I think its important enough I'll call them back.
