I am not sure if the name is correct?

A collection agency has been calling my elderly mother - whose home I have not lived at in almost 20 years and asking for me. My mother says I do not live there but they say they will keep calling her???

I wish for them to stop calling her - I want to write a cease & desist letter and tell them to contact me at MY address in writing. But how do I find out who they are?

They probably will keep calling her. I have never heard of that one, but somebody here probably has. I would recommend that you do exactly what you said - write a cease and desist letter and give them your address. That way Mom won't be bothered with it anymore!

Buy mom an answering machine that she can use to screen her calls. Tell her just don't answer the phone if it's not someone she really doesn't want to talk to. Make sure she understands that people will take advantage of her desire to be polite, but these are not polite people and she ought to just ignore them.

As to your writing to them: look elsewhere on this site (see the "search forums" thing on the lower left) for "demand for verification" or "demand for validation" letters. Also read up on the fair debt collection practices act or fdcpa, also on this site.

Ask mom to get the name of the caller (first and last) and the name of the company, and the street address; tell mom if they refuse to give any of that information, they're in violation of the law and are in the category of harassing phone calls; she can use caller id to log the call, but should also use call trace (which costs extra but provides official documentation of the call that the cops can use), and tell her to call the police.
