So I was sitting down to dinner when my roommate dropped my mail on my lap. There was a collection letter from "northland group" saying that I owed "Genesis Financial" 103.00. Well actually they said they would settle for $103 in "2 easy payments" but never actually mentioned the actual amouint of the debt. Now here is where my confusion comes in... I dont owe anyone any money. No credit card debt, no cell phone debt, no car debt, no bank debt... NOTHING!. So what exactly should I do. I also got a copy of my credit report and there is no mention of northland, genesis or any outstanding debt.

Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks!
Andrew

Mail them a validation letter, certified mail, return receipt requested. They will then have to validate the debt through the original creditor. This may be a mistake, but don't give them any personal info about you, such as your SS#, phone number or address. If it is your account, they can get all that from the original creditor. If they cannot validate the debt, they will have to stop collection efforts, and will not be able to report it to the bureaus. Make sure you mail the letter to the address for correspondence, not the address you send payment to.

Hi Walter. We are not Northland but a community of people trying to help people deal with situations that it sounds like you are in.

Get a copy of the police report, redact any sensitive information and send a copy with a letter to Northland informing them that the account is the result of identity theft, or fraud and that you expect the account to be closed out immediately and any reference to it on your credit reports to be removed.
