Lillian
When the creditors fail to collect the debt from people and the account becomes past due, they hire some collection agencies to continue the collections. Some agency may even purchase the debt from the creditor and later contact that account holder to recover the amount. There is nothing illegal in it but only thing that matters is that the collection agency should show you the legitimate details of the account and prove it to be your account.
Since you have already paid the account some time back to some other collection agency, it was their or the creditor's responsibility to update it as 'paid' to the bureaus. Since this has not been done, you are being contacted by numerous agencies.
Now, your prime concern should be to contact that agency whom you paid this account. Request them to update your account with the bureaus so that your credit is protected from being hurt. Keep all the receipts in hand so that you have a proof of your payments made to them. Do your correspondences in writing and have everything documented in a file. Once it is updated, you won't be contacted by anyone for this account. During this time, if any agency contacts you for this debt, ask them to give you the debt validation details and prove that they are contacting you with the proper account details.
Repay again
Well, I've come to realize that even though they had all the information and sounded very legit, they were not. So now i have to come up with the mney again to settle with the legit company. I'm going to contact the BBB and see how i can if possible recover my money. I also wish that collection agencies from your state would be the ones to notify you because the ones from up north(New York)are nasty and don't have the slightest knowledge of how bad things are here in the south (NC). I hope everyone learns from my mistake and next time just let them wait for you to make a legal move.

Lillian, you should definitely file your complaints with the local AG's office. If they have received similar complaints against them, complaints will be reviewed individually so that necessary actions can be taken. Do you have the receipts of the last payments? These receipts might make your case stronger.
Account screwup
I have the "release letter" that was sent to me and i have a copy of the check they cashed. I will contact the AG and BBB so this won't happen to me or anyone else again. Do you know any good detectives that can help me locate these people and try to get my money back?

Lillian, my heart goes out to you. this really sucks! Could you please post the name of the collection agency that screwed you so we'll know who to look out for? I had two accounts with MBNA that went into charge offs and am dealing with collection agencies on those. I want to make sure I'm not dealing with the same ones that screwed you over. If you could post this info, I would greatly appreciate it. It would be of great help to others here. thanks shirley
Account screwup
Sure, no problem. The people used the name Patrick Corbett law office. Another thing i learned is that if they have never sent you a letter stating that they are collecting this debt before they call you dont send them money or give any private info to them. I don't trust any of them, but i now know how to handle them. No problem with the donation thing either. After this event i'll be happy to help anyone i can.
