Online Checking and Savings Account

Part of my credit battle was being denied for a basic checking account. After much thought I realized that I really didn't need paper checks but just a debit card and the ability to write checks online. I came across a great company called Netspend. I purchased a prepaid debit card and began getting my paycheck direct deposited ( one day earlier than payday!) and also setup a free savings account with them. They allow me about $40 overdraft privelage each month also. I have my phone bill, cell bill and electric bill all setup with them through an e-bill. It has been great . If you need an account follow these steps and you will get $5 for opening an account:

1. Visit mynetspendcard.com to purchase your card online or search for a nearby retailer at netspend.com
2. Once you receive your card in the mail call the number on the back to activate it,
3. Provide your referral code, and get a $5 credit to your Account

REFERRAL CODE: 1553017855

While I guess that's a good option, it's easier to just go to your local Wal-Mart, Rite-Aid or Walgreens and pick up a Green Dot card, or to a Dollar General Store and pick up a Mio card. They all do the same thing.

You can have your payroll direct deposited to the card and use it to purchase things online, buy at any retail establishment, pay your bills online or over the phone, etc.

The only difference is that the fee structure varies. The Green Dot card charges a $4.95 a month fee to have the card - the MIO card doesn't charge that, but they do charge $0.50 per debit card transaction - unless you run it as a credit transaction, in which case it still comes off your card but doesn't incur the $0.50 fee.

This sounds like the Vive checking account I had. http://www.vivechecking.com

You get a debit card and if you have direct deposit and your account is in good standing for 90 days you get check-writing privileges, but you can use your account / routing number to pay bills or use their online bill-pay. The only problem is there is a $30 fee to open an account and $10 month. You can probably find a better and cheaper account locally.

It did work fine for me until I got a roommate that didn't bank locally, so I couldn't cash his checks. I did some thinking and I did have a car loan at a credit union that was set up at the dealership, and I also had a savings account with $5 in it to qualify for membership. I went in there and opened a checking account with no problems even though they use Chexsystems they apparently don't check existing members. Since I've come back here I've been recommending people go through the United Way to get a checking account, but there are back doors to getting a checking account. Do you have a loan or credit card at a traditional bank? Try them out.
