My mother's Social Security is direct deposited into an account held by the both of us - can that be seized since it's her living expenses & not mine?

Yes, the creditor can seize your mother's bank account if they can bring judgment against you to do so. This is because your name is in the account and it is not possible to judge whether the money in the account is yours or your mother's. So I think that you should remove your name from her account.
