I recently had a collector call ( in Texas)and say that if 1/2 of debt isn't paid in 3 days then they would sue. I panicked and gave auth to pay and gave our bank info. After talking to my husband we decided to close out that account before they could get any $$ out of it. We did get the account closed and received notice from our bank that it was returned to sender.

My question is that since there was nothing in writing and no paper check is that like giving them a "hot check"? Thanks for any info- the CA has started calling this week and I would like to know before I call them back.

No it is a past due Credit card with Citibank. I was 90 days past due in Jan 2008 and mailed Citibank $600 and that would have current however they cashed the check and applied to my balance and still sent me to collections. So when these people called week before last week and said they would sue it completely freaked me out!
I tried calling Citibank but it just transfers me to a voicemail that is full. I just want to know if since it was returned to the CA am I responsible for making it good to them or should I send it directly to Citibank. They did try to debit it under "Citibank"- the collection is GC services out of Houston.

First of all, never for any reason give your account information to ANYONE. Most of these collection agencies as they will call themselves are simply " crooks"

Technically yes you gave them an electronic check and then closed the account so in some sense yes it was a hot check as you call it. Proving that it was your intention to fraud them is another story. They really can not prove anything. Before dealing with then again or any other collection agency, you may want to go to the site above and read some of the information there.
