Do checks post when banks are closed?

I did something I tell everyone not to do.. my rent was late and my landlord was pressuring me real bad to give him something. I get paid tommorow so I gave him a partial payment and he put in writing a schedule to pay and everything was great and I was so happy.

Fast forward a bit and I realized that tommorow is Veteran's Day, my work is closed and my credit union is closed. My credit union said they will post my check whenever payroll sends it, probably on Thursday. But does this mean my check will bounce?? i left a voicemail for him to not cash it yet but I think I might be too late :(

oh, by the way, i did ask my bank this question :) but they did not give me a clear answer, they kind of blew me off like i was really shady for doing this (made me a bit paranoid). it was an honest mistake, though.. like the money is always there on this particular day and I never had a bank before that did not direct deposit when they were closed :(
now i think of it, i also have an automatic payment for my electricity bill on this day, what happens to that??

Beal,

I understand your situation. Your credit union should be able to help you answer that question. I am unsure why they blew you off. I would call again and ask.

I will tell you on most major holidays, most transactions are delayed untill the next day. Also most personal checks take up to 2 days to clear an account. I wrote a check once for a purchase with funds availible, and they took almost 5 days to post it to my account. So it really just depends on the receiver's bank and your bank. It also depends on when the receiver has cashed the check. But I am almost certain banks will not do processing if they are closed for a major holiday! Nothing really is set in stone in this situation. So just call and ask your CU again untill you get a solid answer.

Best of luck to you and I hope it works out for you ;)

It is so sad that you people do not even have enough money to pay your rent
Why would anyone take financial info from you

This is irrelevant!

at least he was brave enough to use his name this time ;) always nice that someone thinks it is sad when i am broke lol.
but seriously, the bank will not give me a straight answer for this question and it is really an honest legit question.. i have my electrcity automatically set up for a payment tommorow and my check very well might go in tommorow but my paycheck will come late.. this happened to me once but it was because my payrolll messed up. i can understand the check was my fault for giving it in early but i should not have to pay any fees for the automatic withdrawl :(

Bea2: I am sure you will be ok. I have done that many times and it is just the way it is these days. I feel like I am always juggling around bills since my husband got layed off. You have a credit union which is good, so most likely he has a different bank and it probably won't post until Friday. Also, my electric bill is the same and it won't come out until Thursday. We are all in this together and will work thru it:)

thanks for everyone's support! i went online to check on my electricity bill and noticed that instead of going out today it automatically scheduled itself for tomorrow. :) i get paid tomorrow! (hopefully my payroll still has time to ruin this for me..) i do not see anything on my online banking for my landlord so my guess is his will come out tomorrow, too. if i had known i never would have done this.. my guess is that these will hit at 6 am and my paycheck goes in at nine so they will cover it but charge me $28 for each one.. which does not seem right.. i will be stressed about this until it all works out but at least today was not a disaster.

Yes it does seem right
If your checks hit at 6 and you do not have the money, you will get a fee.
Your check hits at 9 ,but not in time for the checks to be paid. Your bank is doing you a favor by covering them until your money hits.

I'd have to say you're wrong about that ollie. Banks don't post items by the hour. They post all items at the end of the business day. Because the ACH deposit is like depositing cash, bea2ls should be just fine.

I used to work customer service for a bank and trust me, a lot of people write their checks out before they actually have the money to cover it. Heck I've done it myself a few times.

Considering most banks make a majority of their profits from checking account fees, I really don't think they mind that people do this.

thanks, smckaybiz, i agree with you.. my credit union does post things as soon as they come in, regardless of hour and i do not think that is right at all, it is clearly a way to make more money off of bank fees, if you ask me.
but in the end it did work out, my payroll sent our deposits over an hour sooner (they admited this was in their error), so it did post before my automatic withdrawl. my checks did not show up yet, most likely tommorow i guess. i am glad it worked out. i know a lot of people write checks before their money comes in but i really try not to.. i just felt like my hands were tied.
thanks again for everyone's support :)

ken, i meant that i agreed that ollie was wrong.. it is not right if they were to make me pay a fee. i have no idea why you have a problem with me but i do not want any drama here.

thanks, liss. i really was so stressed out. it seems that i work all of the time, and still have to struggle so hard to make ends meet. believe me, i do not have any extras and all i really wanted was a peace of mind.

When I read your post, it reminded me of myself. I know alot of us are going thru this, but you feel like you are the only one. I know you will be fine, just keep your chin up. This is why we are here to support each other:)

thanks, liss :) i did not mean to go off on a vent :)
i am so relieved this worked out, i was so scared to make a partial rent payment, but he was cool about that.. it would have been so much worse if the check bounced!! plus the auto-arrangement with the electric company was to prevent a shut off, so these were really urgent bills.
i hope everything works out for you, i am sure it will.

i have an unusual update on all of this.. my landlord's check ended up posting today. it goes back to what was mentioned earlier.. how my bank posts things in a weird fashion. of course i am in no way complaining, his check came and was cashed with no problems. but i never had a bank that would cash checks throughout the day before? it is not really a problem, it is just something weird that i never experienced before.

unc, i did ask but my credit is still so poor. :( they said after a year they will install it, it has only been four months.
ken064, i have no need to explain myself to you. your negative attitude only serves to bring people down for no reason and it is not welcome here.

From personal experience, if I've written a bad check, it can take at least a week for them to realize it was bad. In my case, I rent from a rental company, and one time it took them a whole month to realize my check was bad. If you wanted to, you could put a stop payment on it, and then go to your landlord with a cashier's check or money order to rectify the payment situation.
