Do not Sign Up for Electronic Statements -- UNLESS

This note is to thank Nancy Walker, at Commerce Bank and to point out an important customer service issue.

Most people want to reduce paper. However, when I signed up for electronic statements, the statement went to my spam folder.

Nancy Walker, (and the Commerce customer care department) are to be commended for their effort. Although I did not receive a statement a few months ago, I sent a check with an amount that I thought would cover the payment. The amount was short of the required minimum. Rather than simply putting my account into "Default" with a higher interest rate, Nancy Walker and Commerce made the effort to find out why I was not paying the proper amount. Only then was it discovered that my statement was going to the trash or spam folder. I have set up the email notification to be moved to my inbox and starred for immediate attention.

Thank you!

Now for a suggestion -- Customers should NEVER be punished for opting for the electronic statement. Unfortunately some banks do this without regard to the problems, like the one mentioned above. Default interest rates at some banks are as high as 29%. Customers who opt for the electronic payment and who pay insufficiently or not at all, should AUTOMATICALLY be sent a paper bill. If they do not pay their paper bill, they should then be notified by phone. If they still don't pay their bill, then it would be reasonable to put their account into default.

I will not opt for 'paperless' billing unless safeguards like these are in place.

Thank you. I will be sharing these thoughts with other credit card companies and with social networking sites.
