What is the maximum amount allowed that one can keep in a bank now?

Well... there is no maximum amount that your bank will restrict you to. However, if you want to reap benefits from your savings, you can keep a certain portion of it in your savings account and invest the rest of it. However, when you plan to invest the money, take professional help for the same.

You are insured up to $250,000 per depositor per bank under FDIC.

You want more than just a savings account...you want to be looking at a money market account or other higher yield account. Talk to a financial planner at your bank.
