Does anyone know anything about this bank?  I am in Chexsystems (I still owe balances to two banks but i'm paying them off comfortably).  I need a checking account in order to do anything these days and I heard they are a good option...any advice appreciated.

I've never seen any of those signs so far but I use my debit card more than I do any checks. I have had an account with Woodforest for almost a month now and I have to say I love them. I've not had a bit of problems.

Maybe one reason that some companies don't take checks from woodforest though is because one of the representatives said that the branch can hold a check for a bit if they need to.

She explained to me that if I didn't have funds and made arrangements to make a deposit the day that they received the check, they would hold the check until I made a deposit, and then cash the check.

I don't know how true it is, but that's what I was told.
I was actually in the branch signing up for an account when a lady called and set up an arrangement to make a deposit before her check came out. And they told her to be there by the end of the day and she would be fine.

My account was finally reported to Chexsystems and my second account (which was in good standing) closed because of it. What a headache! I'm going to go to Woodforest because I have to and because it's convenient, but the complaints I've read about them seem no different than any other financial institution.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I would add a little insight from a company stand point. As far as checks from Woodforest not being accepted it is probably because of so many rejected checks that occur due to hot checks. Sadly, because we do off second chance checking, many fraudulent check writers do take advantage of that. The dept I work in deals with those type of accounts and we see it way too often.

there free checking is really 5.95 a month and they didnt tell anyone.
They signed us up for totally free checking. They do what they want like
other banks and they dont notify their customers. I do like the emails of balances and they forwarning of a check about to clear. Deposits are instant nice also. I just thought their new billing was sneaky!

i agree their new billing was sneaky, and because of that i am closing my accout with them because of that and because of the over draft fee i got charged for. i signed a piece of paper stating that if the money was not in my act my card would be rejected. well being they take days to take debit payments out your acct i over drew and got no help at all and no reply to my emails. personally this bank sucks.

That is why I opt out of banks! I now use a prepaid debit card just to pay bills which they are very few. or when i want buy something online or rent a movie. since I had problems controlling myself from writing checks I couldn't keep up with, I closed the account with Wells Fargo for good. I receive my check in paper, pay bills with cash and the rest I put it in a prepaid debit and my child's credit union saving account. I am on the chexs system but i have no intent of getting an account with another bank and I am curretnly on a payment plan with Wells Fargo. If you think you don't really need a bank for right now, don't get one! you never know what might happen!!!

That happened to me too...I called ChexSystems and they said it was up to the store and if they get enough bad checks from a certain bank they block checks from that bank...Enough said...Woodforest has a bad rep for check writters...

Yup, the $5.95 a month on their "free" accounts is something new as of June 2010. I called and raised cane with them, took them three days but as a "courtesy" got them to waive the overdraft it ended up charging me. This was not a second chance checking account, the account I signed up for over a year ago was FREE. New rule is in order to qualify for the "free" account you must have direct deposit and a minimum average balance of $100. I don't understand how they can just start charging your account without some sort of authorization.
I have an account with a credit union also and any time they make changes they email me and when I log in to online banking there is a flag letting me know something's changed. Not sure why Woodforest could not do the same or even post signs in their branches to inform customers of this change. They were being sneaky that's for sure!

first of all i am a woodforest employee just to get that out of the way. The bank did fully disclose the new 5.95 on their checking accounts. It was included in your bank statmements for three consecutive months before implementation. That tells me someone doesnt balance their checkbook.... big shock.

Dont believe the hype.... woodforest is great!

Open 7 days a week and every holiday but Christmas and immediate posting of deposits with no 02:30 cutover like most banks!

What some people don't understand when they get stuck on this free checking thing is that at some point free checking is going to be a thing of the past. My guess is that in the next few years you will see most banks charging a monthly fee like it used to be.

I help people that are reported to chexsystems and I hear complaints about so many different banks all the time. WoodForest is generally not one of them other than an issue over some places not wanting to accept checks (still have not figured that one out) but I can tell you that WoodForest has allowed many people that were unbanked be able to open an account when no other bank would
