It will stop them from trying to collect further. But, filing bankruptcy would be something I'd do as a last resort. How much is the debt, and do you have other debts to include in your bankruptcy?
You may want to advise the attorney that is representing the creditor/collector that if they are not willing to work out a payment arrangement, you will look into filing bankruptcy. Sometimes when they hear this, they are more willing to cooperate.

Definitely don't file bankruptcy JUST because you have a single debt that the creditor won't work with you on. Call the creditor, as Tiffany mentioned, and discuss the fact that you are considering bankruptcy - that sometimes makes a big difference.
