bankruptcy while I was away from US

Hi,
I had to leave USA 6 years ago because of the visa expiry. At that time I have cc debt of $15,000. I paid the minimum payments for 2 years after that I couldn't cause I had to go for surgery and surgery was unsuccessful so I am kind of disabled.
When I left USA my friend subletted the apartment and all my mail used to come to that address. When my firend moved to another house all the mail forwareded to the new address.
After 4 years now a sherriff came to their house and asked for me and he said that I don't live there which is true. What will happen now? Will the sheriff come again to his house?
recently when I checked my creidt report that 15,000 debt became $35,000 because of intrest rates. The only option left for me is bankruptcy. I can pay maximum of $50 per month in my entire life time. How can I declare bakruptcy If I am out of country? Please help me. I am so confused and I don't know what to do
Thank you so much for this forum

I would suggest calling and speaking with some attorneys in the state you used to live in. Many offer free consultations and you should speak with a few and get advice on how to proceed.

It is not likely that the credit cards will pursue you overseas. Also since you have no status in the US you probably couldnt file BK anyways.
I would also suggest that any mail going to your friends house be returned....have her write on them "Return to sender..Moved and address Unkown" or "Return to Sender....left the country"
