Bankruptcy is not as bad as you might have been led to believe. For most it is a fresh start and a chance to breath again.

shel, I think you can try settling your debts. This will atleast have a much less impact on your credit than a bankruptcy. Debt settlement generally lowers the outstanding debt amount by 40-60%. Moreover, bankruptcy is more suitable to people having secured debts. If you are facing foreclosure or repossession filing bankruptcy is the probable option. However, if you don't even have money to pay the credit card debts after settlement you can file bankruptcy.
I was in the same boat - but I owed 300K on CC and had maybe 60
I was in the same boat - but I owed 300K on CC and had maybe 60K to settle AND I had a good attorney working on it who got me some 40-50% settlements -problem was they wanted the money now or within 2 mths otherwise they'd do an out of court settlement with the understanding they'd get a judgement if I was late with one payment.
I filed Ch7, was audited by US Trustee, passed that, and got a discharge
