However, if it is a debt that was overlooked & in fact did occur before your filing date you may be able to file an amended petition.

That's not always true! I've added two debts to my plan at the end of last year, and my plan was filed in 2007. I had to pay $25 or $26 to have them added. The amending of my plan went through the BK court, and the judge allowed the two debts to be added, probably because I had room left in my Ch 13 plan. Check with your attorney and see if your medical debts can be added.
