I was deployed to Iraq for a year, and the individual that I left as my attorney-in-fact elected to spend all my money and not pay a single one of my bills. I had about $10,000 in collections, and have whittled it down to about $4500, but new collections keep popping up. I feel like I'll never be able to catch up.

Also, I am paying collection fees and interest that accrued during a time which I was serving in a combat zone. What options are available to me? Is it easier to have a debt consolidation service take over? Should I file bankruptcy?

Every 6 months the collectors change, and new fees are added. Some of these bills are from 2 years ago and they just keep getting bigger and bigger. I want to work with the original creditors/agencies, but they are so far in collections now that I will never have that chance. I feel I should only be required to pay the debt that was oustanding at the time that I deployed, not the extra thousands of dollars in collection fees and interest.

Any suggestions?

tpuro,

I would go for a consolidation, since bankruptcy is not a good solution at all. Bankruptcy damages credit report badly.

Consolidation program can eliminate late fees, over limit charges and reduce the total debt amount. As a result you can repay the debt with easy monthly installments that suits your budget and the interest rate is also lesser. Moreover it becomes easier for you to pay one payment per month towards your debts.

You still have the option to choose a debt consolidation program rather than filing a bankruptcy.

Debt consolidation program will not only eliminate the extra charges that are in the form of late fees and interest charges but also, you will be offered a reduced amount that will be much easier for you to pay back.

Since your credit report is already tarnished due to the accounts in collections, filing bankruptcy will further damage it for a period of 10 years. You should try to avoid bankruptcy in any case as the effects of it have been discussed in the page given below.

Debt consolidation program will be a relief to you during this time as all the bills will be combined into one loan amount and you will have easier repayment options. You will be able to achieve your credit worthiness once your payments are complete with your creditors.

The benefits of this program have been described in the page given below:

Considering the fact that you still have better options to improve your credit, you should take a free counseling in this website from the experts. The consultant will be able to solve all your debt related queries and help you in achieving a debt free life faster.
