So, evidently an old employer failed to pay an agreed upon tuition bill from a local college. I was just notified that the bill is now $1600 and the collection agency wants me to pay. I did attend the school, the employer was SUPPOSED to pay the school directly, and I guess never paid the entire bill. This was nine years ago, and I'm just finding out about it now. The SOL in Massachusetts is six years.
The collection guy was unbelievably nice :!: but at the same time giving me the whole song and dance about how the judge will repossess my car (?) if I don't have the cash to pay. He wants a "good faith payment" of $25.00 by next week, which normally isn't a problem. However, I know that as soon as I start paying, the SOL pretty much goes away, right? What advice can anyone give?

Keep in mind, a small payment towards this account will renew the SOL back from the beginning. The CA will insist you in every way to do this activity so that they can later attempt collections legally.

You said this debt took place 9 years back. At this point, it should not be reported in your credit report also. The debt is out of the 7 years reporting period. The CA cannot try to hit the item in your file, otherwise it will be a fraudulent activity.

At this stage, paying off this account won't help. I will ignore it. But make sure that you notify the CA about the expiry of the SOL in writing. This is to cover your base if the file a case against you in the court.

That's what I thought. I am sending them a request for validation letter by certified USPS. This was NEVER on my credit report. Like I said, I'm just now finding out about this debt and the fact that my former employer re-negged on their policy to pay. I I'm just hoping they don't play dirty and make a payment using my name. I've heard that some companies do that.
