I'm pretty sure you were reading the part where the account became active with the collection agency. Have you tried asking for validation? They need to show proof of this account if they are trying to collect on it.
If this does end up being an account that was opened up while you were out of the country, and is definitely not yours, you may need to pursue legal action. Placing a police report, and perhaps contacting social security to obtain a new number will show good efforts on your part if this were to go to litigation.
Have you done any of your own research on this. While investigating this debt, take some time and research this company. Midland has had some sour history. Just read this thread about the company.

Apparently, the company purchased several charged-off accounts from another company. The majority of the complaints placed with the BBB were billing issues, so it's quite possible this is a mistake.
Remember to start a log, and keep notes, with any contact you make with the collector, original creditor, and any legal contact. Dates, times, person name, employee number if available, etc. Perhaps getting permission to record will also help, so you can have proof of conversation.
Everything should be done legally. If your rights are being violated, make a complaint. Depending on the severity of the violation, perhaps seeking legal consul would benefit.
Please let us know on the outcome with this.

Mike
